There are many causes for a clogged drain but hair remains to be the toughest.

First of all, we have so many daily activities that contribute to having strands of hair clogging the sink, and these are necessary activities in all households. For one, we need to take a shower daily and we can’t keep hair strands from falling into the drain as we wash our hair.

That’s why in this post, we’re going to talk about three simple steps on how to address drain clogging caused by hair. We advise that you do these steps regularly, maybe at least once a week, for more favorable results.

But before we dive into the three quick and easy solutions, we’ll share with you first the main contributors of hair clogging.

Hair Clogging Causes

Taking a shower

Whenever we take a shower, we can’t monitor the amount of hair falling into the drain. Whether your hair is long or short, you can still contribute to hair clogging when you take a shower daily.

Now imagine how many members of your household take a shower everyday, maybe even twice a day, and multiply that to the amount of hair that probably falls from each one. Too much hair in the shower drain can cause toilet flooding that is according to kiasuplumber, one of the worst plumbing nightmares in every household.

Shaving

Whether you shave in the bathroom sink or in the shower area, you’re contributing to the likelihood of drain clogging due to hair. While we don’t discourage shaving indoors, consider having a small trash bin under your chin when you shave so the bin can catch the hair instead of the sink.

Cutting hair in the sink

Who’s guilty of cutting their own hair and flushing it down the drain? If you are, then you might consider our tip above. Have a tiny bin near you and put the hair there instead of letting it go down the drain.

Pet bathing

We know that it’s most convenient to give your pooches a bath inside the shower area or in the sink. But if you want to prevent your pet’s hair from clogging the drain, you can consider giving them a bath outdoors.

Stuffed toy washing

If your kids love stuffed animals or dolls and you wash these toys in the sink or in the bathroom, that’s one of the reasons why your drain clogs easily. Hair and feathers from these toys can go down the drain and cause clogging in your plumbing pipes.

Now that it’s clear why there’s so much hair in your plumbing pipes, it’s time to learn how to prevent them from clogging your sink and shower area.

Select a more effective strainer

If you’re using regular steel strainers with tiny holes, you can’t expect them to help you solve hair clogging. There are much more effective drain strainers out there that are designed to prevent hair from going deep down the pipes.

We’re talking about hair catcher drain protectors with features that trap hair from the surface of the drain. Hair catchers are the most effective drain covers.

Nothing beats the natural home remedy

When it comes to clearing drains nothing beats a combination of vinegar and baking soda. These two are very effective in dissolving particles including hair. All the gunk, dirt, grease, and strands of hair that settled down the drain pipes can be dissolved by this sizzling combination!

All you need is one quarter cup each of vinegar and baking soda. Pour each to the drain. Let it sizzle for five to ten minutes, then drizzle your drain with boiling water to finally flush the hair down. Aside from clearing your drain, baking soda has disinfecting properties too.

Manual drain clearing

To manually clear hair from your drain, all you need are rubber gloves and a bent wire hanger. Yes,  if you don’t have baking soda at the moment your sink clogged, just get one of your wire hangers from the closet. Cut one corner and straighten it, then form a hook at one end. After that, put on your gloves and get a flashlight.

Remove your drain cover and, using the flashlight, locate where the hair gunk is. Once you spot it, use the hanger to pull it up.

Now that you know these three simple steps, you don’t need to feel lost whenever you encounter drain clogging.
